The Customization of Adam

Douglas Fir + Vinyl Stickers

2024

This piece reimagines Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. Made from Douglas fir fence posts and propped on sawhorses, the work evokes an active construction site, positioning blue-collar labor and construction materials as "divine" and "sacred", in the same way the original image has been canonized within Western-centric art history.

Viewers were invited to add stickers to the arms, contributing small, personal acts of creation that are also deemed "low" value. The work asserts that all forms of creation (be it construction work, customizing your water bottle with a sticker, or getting a tattoo, etc.) are valid, embodied acts of creation; of birth, of divinity. By positioning everyday gestures and materials alongside canonical traditions, it challenges hierarchies of skill, value, and authority, celebrating relegated labor and expression that underpins all creation.
